Dear All

I hope you are well.

We are launching a new Summer Team Cup to try and support players and clubs, who are able to play, to get some competitive match play. With the regular season still several months away we want to get encourage players and teams back together on court through the summer months to motivate players at club nights and training sessions. This is also be an ideal opportunity for county players and squads, and I hope by counties making their players and clubs aware of the Summer Team Cup, and sharing details on how to enter, we can ensure as many players return to county and league badminton as soon as possible.

It’s free to enter, open to anyone, for teams of 4 players (2 men and 2 women). We are pleased to announce that Babolat have partnered with the new competition and provided 200 dozen shuttles for teams in a prize draw to celebrate the launch of their new hybrid shuttle! The new hybrid shuttle is a blend of feathers with a nylon skirt to provide a more durable and affordable shuttle than standard feather shuttles, but with feather shuttle flight quality. Regardless of what games you appreciate watching, whether it’s football, baseball, hockey, horse racing, or even esports, there are a lot of wagering potential open doors out there for you to exploit. You can discover here where you can place your wagers.

League Season 20/21

Hi all,
I Hope this letter finds you well and coping with the uncertain times we have been through
and are facing.
As we have seen with a lot of sports lately, we believe we should start to make plans for the
return of league badminton. These plans will always be subject to change and in accordance
with the Government and badminton England guidelines.
As you will be aware, in normal times each club should be advising me of the number of
teams they will be entering by the end of this Sunday 30th August. This will not be
happening and I will now advise you of the new structure for this season.
As a committee we have made the decision to delay the forthcoming season. So, to cope
with the reduced timescale we will set the amount of divisions to 4 or 5 (depending on the
number of teams entering) thus resulting in less matches to play per team.

Dates for the Forthcoming Season
This year’s season will begin, week commencing Monday 18th January 2021 (Guidelines
allowing).
I will be needing the number of teams each club will be entering into the 20/21 season by
13th December 2020.
I will be emailing out club details forms in the coming months but I do understand that some
clubs may struggle with details as they still have little idea of when they will be allowed to
return to normal play.
I do ask for all clubs to contact me if there is any change to their current hall availability
status so I can continue to plan for the forthcoming season.
Many thanks,
Clayton Simpson.
(League Secretary)

Isle of Wight v Guernsey

Isle of Wight v Guernsey

THE Isle of Wight hosted its first junior badminton competition against Guernsey, which resulted in a comfortable win against their Channel Islands counterparts over the weekend.
The official match was held at The Fairway sports complex, Sandown, on Saturday, and featured singles, doubles and mixed matches, with round-robin competitions set up after the match for more friendly competition through to its conclusion yesterday (Sunday).
The Isle of Wight team comprised eight boys, aged nine to 17 years, and six girls, aged 12-16, while Guernsey — hosting the Island Games next year — sent over seven boys and girls.
The Islanders took a 2-1 lead with its three boys’ singles matches, but Guernsey fought back to level 3-3 with their girls’ singles, which included one superb match which saw Jess Gilbert, who attends Cowes Enterprise College, lose the deciding set 21-19.
The atmosphere was lively with a good crowd of Guernsey and Island parents and members of Isle of Wight Badminton’s playing community cheering on their players.
The Island eventually won the match 11-4 — a strong win to mark the beginning of what is hoped will become a regular event.

After the round-robin events across the remainder of the weekend, the juniors also enjoyed an exhibition men’s doubles match between the Guernsey and Isle of Wight coaches.
Among the Isle of Wight’s round-robin successes were Ollie Clow in the boys’ singles, while his sister, Emily, won the girls’ event.
Ollie Glanville and Curtis Thompson won the boys’ doubles, while Emily and Jess won the girls’ doubles.
Isobel Humber and Ollie Glanville won the mixed doubles, to make it a clean sweep for the Island.
Isle of Wight Badminton’s Keith Farr, said: “Last weekend was a huge success, both in terms of results and improvement for the juniors.
“The coaches from Guernsey and Island are very proud of their respective teams.”

50th Cap for Sophie

The Isle of Wight Senior County Squad followed up their excellent start to the season having beaten Somerset 7-4 and Dorset 4, 6-5 in the opening weekend of the Senior County Championships with two defeats. The Island side went down 9-2 to a strong Hampshire side with Kes Downer/James Phillips & David Anderson/Yoaan Belon picking up the only two games of the match. The final match of the day against Herefordshire was a closer affair going down to the final two mixed games. James & Lucy Baggott pulled of a good victory beating their opponents 21-16, 21-18 but defeat for Kes & Sophie Baggott resulted in a 6-5 defeat.

The team was Sophie Baggott, Lucy Baggott, Rosie Hancock, Jessica Gilbert, David Anderson, Yoann Belon, Kes Downer, Stuart Isaacs & James Phillips

It was a day of mixed fortunes with Stuart Isaacs breaking his back in two places forcing him out. We all wish Stuart a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on court in the not to distant future.

Congratulation must go to Sophie who played her 50th Cap for the Island and received a well deserved cake from the team.
