Inter County Championships (ICC) Tournament – Swindon/Bournemouth
The Yehlex inter-county veterans’ tournament took place over the weekend of 10th and 11th January at different venues around the country. Competition is always keen, but this is also a sociable event with a dinner-dance, disco and cabaret organised at the teams’ hotels.
The 50s, 55s and 60s played at Bournemouth at the Sir David English centre. Captain of the 55s, Colin Nigh, with his unique style of serving from the back of the court, seemed to baffle the opposition, and, together with Linda Lucas, they won their mixed game against Cornwall.

The 55s team were Colin Nigh, Brian Amy, Mike West, John Herbert, Linda Lucas, Chris Amy, Margaret Morgan and Barbara Herbert.
With two ladies out through illness, games were hard to come by in the 50s team. Ian Parker, Steve Stevens, Pete Kirby, Kevin Boland, Dot Anderson, and Kathryn Price were the players.
Also two short in the 60s, but wins here for Garry Wood and Laurie Scott (2 men’s games) and Sue Oldershaw and Christine Smith (the pair won 4 ladies games altogether!) gave the Island victory over Sussex and Suffolk. Melvyn Price and Gill Osborne won their last mixed to lift the team ahead of Somerset and Suffolk finishing 6th out of 8. Wiltshire ran out the winners here.
The 40s and 65s travelled to Swindon. The 65s ended up bottom of their group which included teams from Essex, Lancashire, Dorset, Bucks, Devon, and winners Wiltshire. Eric Mitchell won three men’s games and two mixed for his side. Tony Isaacs, Tony Black, Beryl Ashford, Marge Herbert and Diane Sabin complete the line-up.
The 40s won two matches, drew one and lost two, finishing 4th in their group. They also went down a storm performing their version of ‘Mama Mia’ in the cabaret at the evening’s social events. The 40s team was selected from Denise Insley, Barry Bushell, Gillian Bushell, Sean Kealty, Rudy Hendon-John, Richard Jones, Maureen Burge, Karin Murrant and Elaine Bricknell.
