IW Junior Badminton Tournament 2011 Week 1

Saturday, 26th March saw the start of the Isle of Wight Badminton Association’s Junior Tournaments. The first of three weeks, held at Ryde Sports Centre, was kicked off in style with the Under 10’s and Under 14’s competition.

The Under 10 singles were played as a knockout competition, the boys was won by Sam Hambley, runner-up Aaron Scott-Roberts and the girls winner was Evie Afonso beating Clarice Johnson in the final. The boys and girls doubles were round robins with just three points separating the top two pairs in both competitions. The boys winners were Aaron Scott-Roberts and Jack Fellows, runners up Sam Hambley and Nicholas Early. The girls was won by Evie Afonso and Isabelle Honnor, runners up Clarice Johnson and Lily Obard. The mixed doubles was also a round robin and was won with maximum points by Sam Hambley and Isabelle Honnor, runners up were Aaron Scott-Roberts and Eleanor Treagus.

The Under 14’s boys singles final was tense from the beginning, Marcel Hueppe and Jacob Honnor were level pegging throughout, and it was looking too close to call the game as they reached 20 all. Jacob Honnor managed to clinch the final point though to win 21-20. The girls singles was won by Victoria Cave beating Lucy Baggott in the final. Jacob and Marcel joined together to take the boys doubles title with maximum points in the round robin competition, Lucas Afonso and Jordan Aspinall earned second place. The girls doubles was a best of three sets straight final. Victoria Cave and Anna Joyce beat Hannah Shorter and Lucy Baggott 15-6, 15-8 to win. The mixed doubles was a really tight competition with just three points separating the top three pairs. Marcel paired up with Anna to take the title narrowly from runners up Jacob and Lucy.

Mallet Cup 2011

Well done to all who entered the Mallet Cup this year. The finals were played on the 27th March.

Vectis A won the Mallet Cup – they beat Whitecroft A 5-3

Whitecroft C won the plate – they beat Cowes 5- 2

Mixed Veterans Tournament 2011

Keith Lacey & Sally Isaacs retained their Mixed Veterans Doubles Title when they beat Tony Isaacs & Sue Oldershaw in Sunday’s final at Yarmouth.
Playing off –12, Keith & Sally took the first set by the tightest of margins 21-20 as their opponents had a handicap of +10. The second set saw them win 21-17 to repeat last years success.

Earlier 8 pairs had competed in 2 groups of 4 with the group winners progressing to the final. Neither finalist dropped a point in the group stages.

Peggy Doherty and John Asher

The Peggy Doherty and John Asher Tournaments will be held on April 10th 2011 at West Wight Sports Centre from 10am.

Mallet Cup Update

The draws for the semi-finals of the Mallet Cup and Mallet Plate have taken place, and are to take place on Sunday 13 March at Freshwater Sports Centre commencing at 10 am, spectators welcome.

RydeKings B v Whitecroft A
MALLETT PLATE
Whitecroft C v Whitecroft B
Cowes v Freshwater B or Newport C (This match is being played Monday 28 February).
The Finals of both the Mallet Cup and Mallet Plate will take place on Sunday 27 March at Freshwater Sports Centre commencing at 10 am.
