The competitors were divided into 2 groups of six with the top 2 progressing to the semi final. The winners of Group A were Kathryn Arnold & Chris Massey who finished 4 points ahead of Debbie & Matthew Honnor. Group B saw Sophie Baggott and Charlie Taylor emerge victorious ahead of Linda Radcliffe and James Collingwood.

The semi finals were won by the group runners up. James and Linda beat Chris & Kathryn 21-7 21-17 whilst in the other semi final Matthew & Debbie needed three sets to beat Charlie & Sophie 15-21 21-8 21-18.

In the final Matthew & Debbie beat defending champions James & Linda 21-18 21-14

It was openly discussed at the users meeting that the site has been profitable for the past two years, so the question on everyones minds was “why should anything change?”.

Chris Massey equalled a record thought unbeatable to win the Under 21 singles at Isle of Wight Junior Badminton Tournament last Saturday (09/04/11) for the fifth year running. He won the tournament for the first time at just 15 years old and so with one year remaining he hopes to beat Dave Anderson’s record set in 2005 to win it a sixth time. Both players will be coming together to play in the Isle of Wight team at the Island Games in a couple of months time.

The men’s singles was a thrilling three set final with Stuart Isaacs winning the first set 21-20 however Isaacs who was not in full health on the day lost the second and third sets 21-14, 21-15.

The plate competition was won by Gary Cooper.

The ladies singles had more entries than recent years which was very positive and culminated in a great final between Sophie Baggott and Sammy Issacs which Baggott took in two sets.

The men’s doubles was a round robin competition with six pairs entered. Massey paired up with 15 year old James Collingwood to take maximum points and the title. Isaacs with 15 year old Alex Southwell were just 4 points behind them to take second place.

Baggott playing with Martha Obbard took maximum points in the round robin competition, close behind them in second place was Chloe Johnson with Rosanna Riddett.

Last event of the day was the mixed doubles which was worth waiting for. The final was between Kevin Cooper with Riddett and Massey with Obbard. It was won by Massey and Obbard 21-12, 21-17. This took Massey’s championship titles for the day to three.

The tournaments were organised by Cleet Holmberg who would like to thank all the supporters, parents and helpers for their efforts over the last three weekends.

The U12’s competition started with a very close round robin competition for the girls singles with Hannah Shorter taking maximum points and the title and Maddie Dyer coming second. The boys played a knockout event which was won by Alfie Hancock who beat Jamie Sheath 11-10 in the final. There was also a plate competition won by Liam Blythe. The girls doubles title was taken by Evie Afonso and Hannah Shorter again taking maximum points ahead of Clarice Johnson-Flux and Isabelle Honnor. Alfie Hancock and Jamie Sheath paired up to take the boys doubles trophy beating Sam Hambley and Max Coshell in two sets. The mixed doubles was again another close competition won by Jamie Sheath and Evie Afonso, just two points behind taking second place was Elys Norman and Hannah Shorter.

The U16’s had a really large entry this year and made for really good events throughout the day. Retaining his title as U16 boys singles champion was Matthew Honnor beating Luke Oakley in the final. The plate was won by Jack Evans. The girls final was tense throughout eventually being won by Chloe Johnson who beat Sophie Baggott 21-19. The plate competition was won by Beth Wathen. The girls doubles was won by Martha Obard and Sophie Baggott who scored a maximum of 60 points, runners up were Victoria Cave and Chloe Johnson. The Boys doubles was a very close game seeing Matthew Honnor paired up with younger brother Jacob narrowly losing in two sets 15-14, 15-13 to Luke Oakley and Alex Southwell. The final event of the day was the U16’s mixed doubles which had 11 pairs competing for the title. The final was between James Collingwood playing with Victoria Cave and Luke Oakley playing with Chloe Johnson. Luke and Chloe won in two sets. The day was non-stop badminton played in a good spirit and enjoyed by all with good support from family and friends. Next week is the final event, the U21’s where it will be seen if Chris Massey can equal a record thought to never be broken by winning the singles title five years in a row.
